For better or worse

By Yunzhong Hou

Context: part of a 50-page dramatic script, in which a noble ponders on the significance of revolution.

Is it for better or for worse, one asks.
Each side has goals and their respective tasks.
While the upturned will abandon home in flight,
The people will call for an order bright.
The one will murder enemies in sight;
The other will fight back with all its might.
Some will call for peace, some kill left and right,
But in sooth all are neither wrong nor right;
It all depends on how to shed the light.
While some had hoards, now they are all in plight;
While some were all in plight, now they have hoards;
Usher in a flip between knaves and lords.
When the fire has cooled and calmed down its urge,
New rules and rulers will hold back the surge.
A new family will rise high and dry,
And again at liberties they will pry.
Human nature remains human nature;
That constant truth will stay, I can assure.
When one stops ruling, another shall rule,
Should what his hands can reach cause him to drool.
A revolt is just a stream with a cog,
To carry up the hill a demagogue.
The time is free, and will pass by degrees,
No forever; just ask the thickest trees.
What by a cold climate happens to freeze
Will but thaw in due time by a warm breeze.
Rebellions and revolts will come and go,
Each bringing to the world both joy and woe.
Each cycle brings the kings to high and low,
Just as the time eternally doth flow.
